A new report from the United Nations reveals that extreme poverty rates have been greatly reduced over the last ten years. The report reveals that more than 1.1 billion people have escaped extreme poverty since 2010. Despite this positive development, close to 700 million people still live in extreme poverty. The data is especially significant because it shows that the goals set by global leaders in 2015 to reduce extreme poverty has been achieved, five years ahead of the target date. This significant reduction in poverty is attributed to strong growth in certain sectors of the economy, such as agriculture and technology. Additionally, the expansion of social safety nets, financial services, and technology have played a major role in providing more economic opportunities for the global population. The United Nations is hopeful that these developments will continue to push extreme poverty rates further down in the years to come.
